definitely education is a good weapon, but i also believe that even if you educate teens with every piece of information available to them and they know the ins and outs of birth control and consequences of getting pregnant, it all boils down to whether they choose to honor their knowledge of right from wrong at the moment in question........sometimes their need for love overpowers their intellect, therefore they find themselves acting irresponsibly......aside from those contributing factors anna mentioned, which are extremely valid as well
preventing teen pregnancy has to come from the parents and teachers.......sex ed can only do so much, but stability at home is the other half........i know of one case where the girl was too afraid to tell her parents she was pregnant at 17 because her father's health was fragile and she was fearful that if he even found out she was sexually active, let alone pregnant, the stress from his reaction would cause him further damage and possibly death........now, of course, both of her parents would've been upset at the news at first, naturally, but they were decent people who would've dealt with the issue with their daughter and abortion would not have been an option, but because there was no communication between them, she wound up making a big mistake..........we, as parents, need to not only educate our children (sons as well as daughters), but we also need to equip them emotionally in case they should find themselves at the brink of making that decision.......unfortunately, what i describe is a scenario that resembles just one part of society; the notion of caring parents.......as heidi has illustrated, there are parents who are just plain evil
incidentally, i am now pondering what circumstance would someone "need" an abortion........that's a really good question, and many would say that something being wrong with the fetus would be a good enough reason.........well, i really dont believe that if a fetus is found to be imperfect it should be aborted, since i've met and have known MANY children with disabilities and deformities ranging from mild to severe, and are the closest beings to angels on this planet, whose mere existence have enriched my life considerably...........had their mothers aborted them because there was "something wrong" with them, i would never have had the total honor to have these children in my life.....so again, im now wondering what a "good reason" for having an abortion would be

actually, blanca, in my opinion you did me more good than i may have done you, simply by opening up the idea to me that there's a lot more to the two women up there who've been answering you than i knew........i now have a totally new respect for anna and heidi, and i never thought that would be possible *LOL*

Well, it's not very often that i'm lost for words but I think this may be one of them.
I can only give an example of what I've seen from where I used to live as a teenager.
I grew up on a very rough council estate which was rife with unemployment and a shockingly bad education system. It was deemed normal for the local girls to drop out of school at 14-15 and become pregnant, some would use abortion as a contraception others would go on to a life living on benefits, it was a vicious circle where the only role model they had was their mother who in turn had dropped out of school herself to have a child.
I guess what I'm saying is that it has to be about education, education and education. Goverment money has to be ploughed into these run down inner city areas where teenagers are written off before they have even started to live.
Preaching about the ills of abortion or waving the finger at underage sex is like locking the gate after the horse has bolted. If somebody preached at me when I was a teenager i'd do exactly what they told be not to.
I'm very pro-choice also but the thought of aborting a 7 month pregnancy leaves me with a very bitter taste in my mouth.
I'll leave the last line to Bill Hicks.....(Pro life people murdering doctors!!!!....can anyone see the irony in that??)
